The most important thing to do before you light our candles is to trim the wick to ¼”. This must be done
EACH TIME before lighting the candle. If you don’t do this, the wick will be too long and draw too much wax and the candle will start smoking. Please keep your candle away from drafts because this will also cause the candle to create smoke. If a candle starts to smoke blow it out, trim the wick to ¼” and relight. As a rule of thumb a three inch diameter pillar will burn best only up to 3 or 4 hours at a time, and a four inch diameter pillar for up to 4 or 5 hours at a time. Our pillar candles are designed to burn 15 hours per inch of wax. For example a 3" x 6"candle will burn for 15 hours times 6 inches or 90 hours. And a 4" x 6" candle will burn 90 hours as well.
Candle-scaping, if done correctly will work, but if you put two or more pillars too close together you will create a problem. When pillars are less than three inches apart from each other and if one is shorter than the other, the heat given off by the burning candles will soften the sides of the taller candle and compromise the integrity of the wax. When this happens the melted pool of wax will create a hole in the side of the pillar. The melted wax will run down the side of the pillar and the flame will burn out of control causing smoke and melted wax to damage furniture or carpets.
To avoid this problem keep your candles three of more inches apart.
Hurricane candle holders that are designed correctly suspend the pillar so that the candle is surrounded by air including space between the bottom of the candle and the bottom of the hurricane. This keeps the outside of the candle cool and allows a draft so that the heat from the candle escapes through the top of the hurricane. If you put a pillar at the bottom of a hurricane the flame will heat the air in the hurricane and soften the wax and the candle will not burn the way it was designed to burn. The sides at the top of the pillar will fall out and melted wax will spill into the hurricane and the flame will burn out of control.
